Dick was born to Samuel and Mary Brown of Youngstown, Ohio on April 7, 1934. He attended primary
and secondary school in Youngstown and then attended Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. He
graduated in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Bachelor of Science
in Commerce.
In his early professional career as a contract engineer, Dick worked for a variety of companies. These included Martin Aerospace in Orlando, Florida and Sylvania in Buffalo, New York. He then started work at
Honeywell in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1974. His career saw a string of successes, including righting a
failing program providing spare avionics parts for the F‐15 Eagle fighter, along with several defense
department and space programs. He was so successful as a project manager and leader. Towards
the end of his career at Honeywell, he was tasked with teaching his program management techniques to
various Honeywell divisions around the country. He retired from Honeywell in 1998.
As a father, Dick set an outstanding example of what was required for his children’s academic, personal
and professional success. He was involved with boy scouts and other family activities. He promoted
high moral and ethical standards in the family setting. Always willing to “work the problem”, Dick
steered his family through the ups and downs of daily life, and could always be counted on in times of
crisis for guidance and support.
Dick was a lifelong car enthusiast. He was always interested in discussing classic cars and racing.
His collection included the 1960 Ford Thunderbird that his father Samuel had purchased new, a 1971
Corvette convertible, a 1957 Mercury and a Model T street rod. After retiring, Dick spent a lot of time on
his cars, as well as enjoying sailing his thirty foot boat on a lake in the Phoenix area.
Dick leaves behind his children Jay (Stacene) Brown, Jeffrey (Ai) Brown, Jennifer (Kurt) Gengler, longtime companion Ellen Milner, four grandchildren and one great grandchild. He will be inurned at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis, and remembered at a private memorial by his loving family.
