Roger was born in Flandreau, South Dakota July 22, 1944. After completing high school, he joined the Air Force at the age of 17. He had his basic training in San Antonio, Tx and the majority of his enlistment was spent in Newfoundland. He often talked about his involvement in the 21 gun salute and playing taps at memorial services. He was very honored and proud to be assigned these duties.
Roger and I (Linda) were married in 1985. We each had a daughter and a son from a previous marriage and our family blended well. We relocated to Phoenix, AZ one year after we married. His daughter, Shellie (Mike) Stubsten and his son, Chad Holvig live here, as well as my Son, Brian Straub. My daughter, Brenda (Knut) Ellingsen resides in Jamestown, ND. Roger is also survived by 3 granddaughters, Kayla Holvig, Eden and Ariel Ellingsen and 1 grandson, Dalton Holvig. Our most recent pride and joy is our great grandson, Owyn Reed McCoy, son of Kayla. Roger is also survived by several aunts and uncles and many cousins. His Father, Lloyd Holvig preceded him in death in 1969 and his mother, Rose Adeline Holvig passed away just last December 2016 at the age of 101 1/2 in Flandreau, SD.
Roger had a long career in trucking in the cargo claims area and before retiring in 2006 he was working in insurance claims adjusting. He loved tinkering on cars and guns. He was a man of many talents and strived to do them all well.
Most of all, Roger loved his family and family was first with him. He died quietly and peacefully at our home on the evening of March 10, 2017 and I was honored to be with him as he passed from this world to the next. He will be terribly missed by us all.
Arrangements under the direction of Shadow Mountain Mortuary, Phoenix, AZ.
