Shirley Ann Espeland passed away peacefully on Friday, July 18, 2025, in Scottsdale, Arizona at the age of 93. She lived a full life filled with love of family, and her love shined on all who crossed her path. Shirley was cherished by all who knew her, because of the way she lived her life… She was caring, kind, generous, compassionate, brave, strong, beautiful, loving and always gave of herself. She was everything we all hoped to be. Her laughter was contagious. She taught us the value of family, tradition, friendship and instilled in us the power of faith.
Shirley was born on June 9, 1932, to Irene and Gerhart Peterson. She grew up in Madison, Minnesota, and had three sisters and one brother. She graduated from Madison High School and soon started working at the State Bank of Madison, now United Prairie Bank, and was a teller for over 30 years. Bank customers adored her and would wait in her line (although other tellers were available) so she could wait on them.
Shirley was very involved in the community as a member of the Lac Qui Parle County Fair Board and Hospital Board. She loved to bowl, and was one of the best, as evidenced by the many trophies she received. And like most everyone else in the family… a lover of sports. She was a big fan of baseball, basketball, football and golf.
In 1993 she moved to Phoenix to be closer to her family. She lived with her daughter, Peggy and son-in-law, David, and helped raise her grandchildren – Sara and Hailey. How lucky we were to have Grandma, Nama, Shirl to help care for them. While in Phoenix, she volunteered at All Saints Lutheran Church for several years and gave of her time whenever needed.
Shirley is survived by her children, Peggy and husband David Atchison, and Steve Espeland; grandchildren: Sara and husband Bob Frie, Hailey and husband Kyle Towles and Eric Espeland. Shirley also had four great-grandchildren: Madeleine, Jack, and twins – Elaina and Olivia. Her sister Mary and husband Gary Camp from Colorado.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; Irene and Gerhart; siblings Donnie, Betty and Dorthy, and husbands, Tom Tollefson and Charles Espeland.
We’ll honor her with a Celebration of Life service at All Saints Lutheran Church – Friday, August 1, 2025, at 4:00pm. She will be forever in our hearts.
