Terry was born in Los Angeles, California on 2 October 1946 to Thornton Dick Gibson Senior and Elizabeth Rozella Hannah. At the age of 10, he moved with his family to Phoenix, Arizona. Terry graduated from Orangewood School in 1960 and attended Cortez High School, graduating in 1964.
Terry served four years in the Air Force during the Vietnam era as a logistics specialist. He was stationed in Korea, California and Massachusetts. Following his service to the United States, he attended Northern Arizona University and graduated in 1974 with a degree in accounting. He went to work as an accountant and an auditor for the Defense Department upon graduation until his retirement in 2001. His entire career was based in the San Francisco Bay area. Upon moving back to Phoenix in 2006, Terry worked part time as tax consultant for H & R Block until 2022.
Terry married Susan Kuniyuki, native of Hawaii, in 1984 and they were together until Susan’s death in 2014. In 2016, he married Alice Colburn, who survives him.
Terry was an avid world traveler. He loved cruises in the Caribbean and he traveled to Europe and frequently to Susan’s native Hawaii. He very carefully planned the details of every trip. He was his own travel agent.
The San Francisco Giants and 49ers have lost a very loyal fan. He loved those teams and followed them closely and rejoiced in many wins and World Series championships. Many enjoyable afternoons and evenings were spent at the Giants’ home park (under numerous names) in China Basin.
If Terry’s life could be summed up in one phrase, it would be this – “he did it (life) HIS way”.
Terry is survived by his wife, Alice, his brothers Thornton Dick Junior "Ted" and William Riley. He is also survived by his two nephews, William Terrill and Ryan Dean; grandnephew, Michael and four grand nieces, Kail, Mary, Christina and Hannah; one grandniece, Kyrene, preceded Terry in death; one great niece and one great nephew. His three stepsons survive him: Michael Compton (Jeanna Brown), Drew Colburn (Tomi Colburn), and Darin Colburn (Claire Colburn), as well as his five step grandchildren: Poppy, Perrin, Penny, Wells, and Quinn Colburn.
