She was the absolute heart of this family, and the void created by her absence can never be filled — only fondly remembered.
Virginia Portillo Hernandez — our beautiful Mom, Mama, Nana, Granny— was born on May 8, 1944, in Phoenix, Arizona to Virginia Marquez Portillo and Antonio Portillo.
She was married to the love of her life, Domingo Hernandez, for 64 wonderful years before his passing in July of 2020.
She is survived by her five children: Domingo “Mitch” Hernandez Jr./Richard Harrell, Richard “Rick” Hernandez, Mary Jane Hernandez Bandin, Marguarita Hernandez and Anita Hernandez Cota/Frank Cota Jr.
Also survived by her siblings Emeterio Portillo and Angie Portillo Hernandez
Virginia was blessed with many grandchildren who brought her endless joy: Dominique Cota Garcia/Jose Garcia, Richard “Ricky” Bandin/Oscar Gamez, Danielle Cota, Victor Hernandez/Romann Arizmendi, Nicole Bandin, Deserae "Desi" Cota, Samantha “Sam” Bandin, Georgina" Gina" Cortez, George Cortez/ Erika Figueroa and Leticia "Leti" Cortez/Mario Gutierrez.
Her love extended to her great grandchildren, who cherished her deeply: Alexa Garcia, Dominique “Nique” Garcia, Reina Garcia, Michael Cortez, Joaquin Garcia, Ariella Bandin, Xzavier Hernandez, Diamond Cortez, Daniel Cortez, Isaac Bandin, Mario Gutierrez, Jessie Cortez, Avayah Gutierrez, Zelby Arizmendi and Rosalinda "Rosie" Gutierrez
Virginia was preceded in death by her beloved husband Domingo R Hernandez, and granddaughter Jasmine Hernandez; her siblings Ernestina "Wila" Portillo Hernandez, George Portillo and Josephine “Chepa” Portillo
Virginia opened her heart and home to all. Her life was a living example of generosity, devotion, and unconditional love. She dedicated herself to the well being of her family — every member, near and far. You no longer need to be the caretaker now, and we ask that God take care of you with the same love you so faithfully gave to us.
John 14:27 — “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.”
Her love is with us always — her spirit will guide us eternally.
A Rosary and Visitation will be held at Advantage Funeral and Cremation Services Maryvale Chapel, located at 6901 West Indian School Road, Phoenix, AZ 85033, on October 13, 2025, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
A Funeral Mass is scheduled at Saints Simon and Jude Cathedral, located at 6351 N 27th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85017, on October 14, 2025, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.
The Committal will take place at Greenwood Memory Lawn Mortuary & Cemetery, located at 719 N 27th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85009, on October 14, 2025, from 12:00 pm to 12:30 pm.”
