Wallace “Wally” Perry, a true Arizona original and third-generation native, passed away on May 15, 2025, at the age of 96. Born in Phoenix in 1929 to Allan K. Perry and Capitola O. Roach, Wally lived a life as bold and spirited as the state he loved.
Wally was the younger brother of Allan R. Perry and Yvonne (Perry) Lilley, both of whom preceded him in death. Raised in a family of pioneers, Wally carried forward a legacy of community, adventure, and dedication to Arizona.
A proud graduate of North High School, Wally earned his A.A. from Phoenix College, attended the University of Alaska, and later completed his B.A. at Arizona State University. He also served his country honorably in the United States Army Signal Corps during the Korean conflict.
Professionally, Wally owned and operated his own insurance agency and served as a receiver and trustee for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court. But his true legacy was built not just in business, but in the vibrant communities he helped shape. In the 1950s, while living in Eloy, he held several civic roles including President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, and was a charter member of the Casa Grande Valley Elks and the Phoenix and Prescott Elks Clubs. He was also active in the Lions Club and the Civil Air Patrol.
Later in life, Wally became a member of the Phoenix Thunderbirds, where he played a key role in bringing the Virginia Slims Tennis Tournament to Phoenix. He was also deeply involved with the Arizona Horseman's Association, served as President of the Exchange Club, and was a proud member of First Families of Arizona.
In the 1970s, Wally discovered a passion for hot air ballooning. He earned his pilot’s license and flew the Arizona Superstar balloon for many years. With his extensive insurance knowledge, Wally partnered with the distinguished Lloyd’s of London to help insure fellow hot air balloonists. He was also the founder of the Arizona Balloon Club, inspiring many to take to the skies. Not one to stop at just one adventure, Wally became involved in thoroughbred racing, owning several horses through Winner’s Get Lost Stables—his favorite being the beloved Fine Crystal.
Beyond all his accomplishments, Wally found joy in life’s simpler pleasures: fishing, world travel, playing tennis, and spending time at his cherished cabin in Iron Springs.
Wally is survived by his children Allan R. Perry, Lisa J. Perry, and Linda A. (Perry) Boeing, and by his grandchildren Carrie Mabee (Jason) and Matt Wearmouth. His family and friends will remember him not only for his many adventures and achievements but for his larger-than-life personality.
Wally was a true character—never without a joke or prank up his sleeve, a glass of wine in hand, and a story to share. Whether you knew him well or had just met, he made you feel like the most important person in the room. He lived with heart, humor, and a fearless love of life.
He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
A “Heavenly Happy Hour” to celebrate Wally’s life will be held May 29th from 4-6 p.m. at the Beatitudes Life Center 1610 W. Glendale Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85021. In lieu of flowers, raise a glass of wine, tell a good story, or embark on a small adventure—just as Wally would have wanted.
