

Walter M. Haskell, beloved husband, father and grandfather, returned to his heavenly home on June 15 at the age of 93. He was born in Kuling, China on August 29, 1920 to his missionary parents, Walter W. and Ethel Haskell. Walter graduated from the University of Missouri and continued his studies at the University of Chicago before serving as a purser and pharmacist's assistant with the Merchant Marines during WWII. On June 21, 1947 he married the love of his life, Mary Evelyn Rankin in Kansas City, Missouri. The couple moved to Tucson in 1952 where their daughters Kathy and Joan were born. In 1961, Walter moved to Phoenix with his family and served as an administrative law judge with the Department of Economic Security until his retirement. Walter was a devout Christian and member of the Disciples of Christ congregations at Phoenix Central Christian Church and Foothills Christian Church. During his years of service to the church he sang with the choir, taught Sunday school and served as an elder. He will be remembered for his love of life, generosity, kindness and quirky sense of humor. Walter is survived by his wife of 67 years, Evelyn, daughters Joan Cook and Kathy Riney (Carl), and his granddaughter Shelby Feuerbach (Kyle) who will miss him very much. A memorial service will be held Friday, June 20, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel at The Terraces, 7550 N. 16th St. in Phoenix.
