Yin spent his youth in his father’s bakery, where he often "found" broken cookies and pastries to eat for himself. In 1951, at the age of 16, he and one of his younger brothers escaped communist China for Hong Kong. He worked there as a construction worker, site foreman, and taxi driver before arriving in the United States as a refugee in 1973. In the U.S., he worked as a cook at several restaurants and retired as a wafer tester from Motorola.
Yin married Rui Lian in 1982. He was an avid gardener who spent much of his time tending to trees and flowers, and he greatly enjoyed listening to guzheng music. Most of all, he loved spoiling his grandchildren with lots of snacks.
He is survived by his wife, Rui Lian; daughter, Camay; son-in-law, Daniel; and his grandchildren, Samuel, William, and Danica.
