Yuet Sheung Ong, 87, of Scottsdale, AZ, went to be with the Lord on February 2, 2015. She was surrounded by her family members as she graduated into Glory. Mrs. Ong was born in 1927 in the Toon Hing Sei Village in the District of Toon Lon, the municipality of Kai Ping, of Canton, China. She was the eldest of two children born to Quan Mon Chee and Chow Line Phone.
Life was hard for Mrs. Ong, her mother and her grandmother. They fled to the hills surrounding their village to escape the Japanese invasion of China and years later the Communists invading China. Mrs. Ong's grandmother was terrified of Communist occupation and ended up taking her own life , rather than falling victim to the Communists.
In 1948, a marriage was arranged between Yuet and Key Tong Fong. In March of 1950, she arrived at the San Francisco Immigration Camp with a one year old in tow and 3 days later arrived in Phoenix.
Yuet and Key's first store was located at 2446 East Broadway; it was called Key’s Market and was little more than a wooden building with four walls and a roof.
By 1952, they had saved up enough money to build a larger store. And by 1962, two more sons and two daughters, were born.
In 1964, Key died, leaving Yuet with 5 young children and a grocery store to support. The next few years proved difficult, but Yuet somehow managed with help from friends and family. One of the help was Chew Ling Ong. In 1968, they married and 2 years later added twins to the family.
Mrs. Ong spent 31 years in the grocery business. In 1981, she and her husband retired from the grocery business. She is survived by five children: Charlie (Elsa) Fong, Mary (Ben) Ong, Judy (Mark) Lyman, Jo Ann (Harold) Wong, and Billy Ong, along with 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, as well as a brother (Ming) and sister-in-law (Gum Dang) in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. She is predeceased by two husbands, Key T. Fong (1964), and Chew Ling Ong (2012), and two sons Jim Fong (2012), and John Fong (1990).
Viewing will be at First Chinese Baptist Church on Feb. 13, 4910 E. Earll Drive, Phoenix, from 5-8 PM. Services will be on Saturday, Feb.14 at Serenity Chapel of Greenwood Cemetery, 2300 W. Van Buren at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Chinese Baptist Church.
