

Born in Detroit Michigan on September 16, 1937, he was the son of the late Robert Newman and Margaret Newman.
After serving his country with honor in the United States Army, Burton began a long and fulfilling career in engineering. He eventually retired from General Motors, where he thrived in his career as an system engineer. Burton was committed to helping others, he spent much of his time volunteering at Pickens Hospital, the local food pantry, and with hospice patients affected by AIDS. His compassion led him to earn his Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license so he could better serve those in need during his time of volunteering. He was a theologian, and was especially passionate teaching the Bible. He often led devotions with his family and taught Sunday school at his church, sharing spiritual wisdom.
Burton is survived by his son, James Newman; daughter, Carol Newman (Carlos "Skip" Yowell); bonus daughter, Wanda Maxey; bonus son, Alvin Bailey; grandchildren: Jessica Newman, Barbara Newman, Jessie Maxey, Samantha Bailey, and Abbie Maxey; daughter-in-law, Eileen Newman; sister, Claudia Laine (Yvan "Frenchie"); brother, Kenneth Newman (Jeanne).
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Barbara Newman; second wife, Ollie Newman; and son, Wayne Newman.
A visitation for Burton will be held Monday, June 2, 2025 from 1:00 PM to 1:45 PM at Dillard Funerals and Cremation, 2402 Gentry Memorial Highway, Pickens, SC. A funeral service will begin Monday at 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel. A committal service will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
