Vera Mae Robirds, age 87, passed away at her home in Six Mile, SC, surrounded by her family on Sunday, May 8, 2016. From her birth in Canton, NC on December 20, 1928 to her death on Sunday she nourished people around her with her faith and love. She was the oldest of three children born to Jane and Elwood Holland, and was half-sister to three more siblings, whom she loved dearly. Her faith was very important to her and she served several congregations, most recently as a member of Cannon Memorial Baptist Church in Central, SC, for over 23 years. Vera’s special interests and hobbies included caring for God’s creation through keeping beautiful flower and vegetable gardens. She was a prolific quilter and enjoyed sharing these with her family and loved ones. She crocheted many blankets and hats, and for many years donating her creations to those in need. Many of her family will remember her each day when they see her creations lovingly displayed at their homes. Her favorite memories were gathering with family for reunions, especially those where all of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were around. She loved to travel and spent many hours on the road enjoying God's creation. Vera is survived by her husband of 51 years, Bill; daughters, Linda (Arlen) Heatherly, Dorothy (Tim) Baer, Mary (John) Boynton, and Kim Sutton; daughter-in-law Michelle; sister Nell and brother James; sister-in-law JoAnn; 11 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren. Visitation will be Wednesday May 11, 2016 from 1:00pm to 2:45pm at Dillard Funeral Home, 2402 Gentry Memorial Hwy, Pickens, SC with Chapel service to follow at 3:00pm. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens with her grandsons as pallbearers. She was active in her community, donating her time and talents faithfully over the years, even being honored along with her husband Bill for their service in upstate South Carolina. Vera will be remembered as a bright, shining light in the various communities and churches she served.
