During retirement he could be seen navigating his beloved 36’ Monk trawler “Sungate” named after his most renowned invention, around the Chesapeake Bay. Howard always enjoyed socializing with family and friends over his 4:00 PM cocktail, a tradition that continued well into his 91st year. He is predeceased by his wife of over 50 years, Marie and survived by his children Steve Gillery of Florida and his girlfriend Virginia Butz, daughter Kate and her two daughters Christa and Maggie Meeder of Pittsburgh, and Kate’s twin Alison Kuzmak, her husband George, and their two children, Gregory and Nicholas, all of New Jersey. Howard maintained a dignified and self reliant lifestyle through his 91 years. His family is proud of his lifetime accomplishments and the respect, love and dedication he showed to all who knew him. Rest In Peace, “Pop Pop”. At Howard’s request, there will be cremation but no viewing. Due to Covid restrictions, there will be no immediate memorial. A small service in 2021 will be considered at a later time.
