Lucille was an adventuresome, curious and courageous woman who loved to try new things and then share them with her family. 
Her and Sam's love of travel took them over most of the United States & Mexico with many stops to visit family along the way. Some of our fondest memories are of road trip stops in Riverside at her brother Norman's home to see him, his wife and daughter and his grandchildren. 
Lucille & Sam would regale the family with tales of the their latest Good Sam Club RV adventures and show us the latest arts & crafts trick. Folding money into elf boots, crocheting pot holders, making mobiles to brighten up the RV and always sharing new and exciting recipes were the order of the day. You never knew what you were going to get from Lucille & Sam, but you knew it was going to be great!
Lucille & Sam's door was always open. For a dinner, a night or longer, you always had a place to stay that was family with Lucille & Sam.
Looking around our homes, we all have bits and pieces of their travels and crafts. A pot holder, a china plate, a piece of jewelry or the world's greatest recipe books! 
She will be missed, but never forgotten. Not as long as there are hungry mouths to feed and stove to work with! Who wants chili?!

Aunt Lucille and Uncle Sam were important family members in my growing up.  I learned many lessons from them when our families got together, whether in San Antonio, California, or Washington.  I learned that all families were not alike, the rules and discipline, the games and activities could be quite different.  I learned a lot about teasing, how to take it, how loving it was. There was unwavering respect for each other and love was never in question.  When the 5 cousins got together (sometimes Jean and Joan were there too, and that was more special) we always had a good time.  We were only allowed access to Sam and Lucille's bedroom with special permission.  And very special permission was needed to play Lucille's little wood cased radio.  When I was sick Lucille brought over her little radio for me to use, and I knew how very loved I was.  She always had fun stories, great suggestions, and time for understanding.  I am grateful she was a consistent influence in my growing up.

Tia Lucille, You have tought me a great deal about life, crafts, cooking and to look at life as an adventure. To have fun, laugh and love. We love you tell Tio Sam we miss him too! Julie Burrows/ Jeans daughter

I still have fun memory's of Lucille and Sam getting together with my parents and partying!  They were quite the foursome.  Our prayers and thoughts are with all of your family.

What a gal!  She had a way of keeping you smiling and guessing as to whaat she was about to say next.  Her smile always let you know that she loved you unconditionally and always would.  She will be missed but never forgotten. We love you Aunt Lucille.

I miss you Grandmother. I am so glad that both you and Pa were around for my daughters Meghan and Jacquelyn get to know you and have such great memories of you both. I hope that I can grow up to be as gracious a lady as you were. I love you Grandmother.

We will miss this wonderful and fun women.  She always had a smile and something good to say.  She has been a model for me.  Your life was enriched by knowing Lucille.

In 1889 when our grandparents, Annie Rugland and John Fredrick Ehlers wed as young imigrants from Norway and Germany, they couldn't have known how their lives and their children were going to affect us even to this very day when we remember my Aunt Lucille, their youngest daughter born in 1913.  Their other eight children born over 14 years, our aunts and uncles, included Herman, Marie, Martin, two Claras, Lillian, Norman, and my own wonderful mother Ruth Ehlers Simons.  Lucille was the last of those nine children born over 14 years--either that was quite enough for these poor farmers or Lucille was quite enough!  My mother, Ruth, always thought of Lucille as her own baby to tend even though she was only seven.  Through their lives, they remained very close, of course. 
 
They saw to it that they would visit with each other often, despite the distance and the price of phone calls.  My parents and I made long, hot car trips to the northwest and California to visit.  The Pattons would visit us in deep south Texas, and I grew up knowing I had pretty fine California cousins through our uncles Martin and Norman and the one who bossed the deals usually:  Aunt Lucille was the one who drew us together with her great, good humor, good food, and dozens of crazy craft projects--I've just become the proud recipient of some of those crocheted hangers!  She had my mother completely consumed with china painting which became wonderful amusement for many years.  She sent us several of her cookbooks, and when I married, she sent recipes galore to get me through several nights with leftovers for lunches!  She always kept up with me and my family who last saw her 11 years ago for our son's wedding here in California.  It was a sweet family honor for her to be with us with Pat and Don and Priscilla.  Most recently I've been the honored recipient of one of her handmade bracelets--working right up to closing time wasn't she? 
 
My Auntie and her family were products of a very different time: they had to go to some effort to keep in touch, they made the effort, and here you are today, celebrating together our kinship.  Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
