Stanley Maxwell Bird Sr., 90 years of age and a longtime resident of Georgetown, went to his Heavenly Home on Sept. 27 when he joined Hattie, his beloved wife of 65 years. He was born in San Jose, Calif. on Jan. 22, 1928. He and his sister, Lillian, grew up in Lomita Park, Calif. (a community now incorporated by San Bruno). He played basketball and was on the diving team. He met his future wife, Hattie Abraham, while attending Lomita Park Grammar School. Stan graduated from San Mateo High School in 1946 and was drafted in 1950. He then went to Ford Ord on Monterey Bay for basic training, then on to Fort Belvoir in Virginia where he successfully completed the Engineers’ Leadership Course. He returned home to marry Hattie in 1951, just before he was sent to Korea. He spent almost three years in the Army and he was shot in both legs while serving in Korea. He spent seven months in the Army hospital in Camp Cooke in California (now Vandenberg Air Force Base). He received an Honorable Discharge in 1953. In 1957 he received his AA Degree from the College of San Mateo and began his career as an electrician. Their daughter Kris was born in 1955, Stanley Jr. (who has since passed away) was born in 1958 and Lori in 1959.
The family moved to Woodside in the early 1960’s where the children attended school. They camped every summer at San Mateo County Memorial Park. In 1966 they bought property in Georgetown, where they built a home, and enjoyed weekend visits and summer vacations before their permanent move to the Divide in 1974.
Stan and Hattie were founding members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Georgetown. Stan was a 25 year member of the Georgetown Fire Department, he was Fireman of the Year in 1979, and he served as Captain of Station 62. Much of the family followed in his footsteps and became involved with the department for many years.
Stan and Hattie loved to entertain, hosting many gatherings and reunions for family and friends. The holidays were always special occasions. During his last days Stan was able to come home for one last time.
This wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather was preceded in death by Hattie, his parents, Deering and Florence Bird, his son, Stanley Bird Jr., and grandson, Tucker Reite. He is survived by daughters Kris Presba (Ken), Lori Reite (Jim), and sister Lillian George all of Georgetown. He also leaves seven grandchildren Michael Stigen (Victoria), Bobby Stigen, Connie Stigen Stroh (Robert), Joey Reite, Josh Bird (Amy), Dalton Bird, and Connor Bird. He leaves seven great-grandchildren, Sophia, Cedar and Taylor Stigen, Audrey, Kendall and Gabrielle Stroh, and Brody Stigen.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church in memory of Stan. Services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 6417 Main St., Georgetown (next to GDPUD) on Tuesday Oct. 23 at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Georgia Slide Cemetery, Georgetown. A potluck at the church will follow the interment.
