

David Lee Summer, 69, went home to be with His Lord Thursday, February 11, 2016 in Plano, Texas after a strong fight against Parkinson’s and Distal Esophageal Cancer. He was born April 17, 1946 to Ronald Harry Summer and Phyllis Jane Roome Summer in Canton, Ohio. He married Virginia “Ginny” Ann Willett on August 5, 1967 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Minerva, Ohio.
David graduated from Minerva High School, Minerva, Ohio in 1964 having joined the US Naval Reserves in 1963. He served on the USS Picking (Fletcher class Destroyer) during his tour of duty in Vietnam. After returning home in 1967, he attended DeVry University in Chicago, IL earning his Associates Degree in Electronic Engineering and University of Dayton in Dayton, OH earning his Bachelors Degree in Engineering with Minor in Chemistry. He worked over 31 years in the telecommunications industry starting with GTE in Marion, Ohio. He moved to Texas in June, 1978 with Danray Inc. working later with Northern Telecom, Southern Pacific Communications, Sprint, and retiring from Ericsson in 2001. However, he could not stay home long and went back to work at Perot Systems/Dell until 2013.
David loved his family dearly and was very involved in his grandchildren’s activities. He never wanted to miss a baseball or soccer game, dance performance, Scouting or school or church event. His grandchildren have the love of model trains because of Papa. He also had a tremendous love for softball! He has played on and coached more baseball/softball teams than one can count including the church league team he coached and played on with his son and son-in-law. He umpired girls and adult softball for over 26 years. He was an All-American pitcher/player in the Softball Players Association and participated in Senior Softball tournaments around the country. David also was a supporter of Scouting. He earned his Eagle Scout rank in 1962 and served as a Charter Adult Leader for many years for Troop 1000. He was a lifetime member of the Lutheran Church. He served the church in various ways over the years most recently at Preston Meadow Lutheran Church as Usher and a member of the Green Team (landscaping/mowing).
He is preceded in death by his father, Ronald, in 1998 and sister, Sharon Lynn, in 1959. He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Virginia, his mother, Phyllis, his son Christopher and wife Susan (Popelarski) Summer of Plano, Texas and their children Rebekah, Elisabeth, and Hannah, and his daughter Sharon and husband Robert Adcox of Carrollton, Texas and their children Stephen and Rachel.
