Phil Maddox was my orchestra teacher during my senior year at La Jolla High School (1963-64).    I truly enjoyed working with him and appreciated the opportunities he gave me.   He was a good teacher and a fine human being.   I wish I'd known he was in Plano during my years in Dallas (1984-94).  I certainly would have looked him up.   My sincerest condolences to the Maddox  family.

Mr. Maddox was my orchestra conductor in all my years at Bowman Middle School. One of the most influential people I will ever have in my life. It’s no surprise that he affected others the way he affected me. I played the cello in his orchestra and pushed me to my potential not only as a member of his orchestra but as a growing person. I always got excited when I’d see his little Chevy trottin around Plano even after I moved on from Bowman. My condolences to his family from mine.

Mr. Maddox, Thank you, thank you, thank you.  I was fortunate to have you as my orchestra teacher at Bowman and am so grateful that you introduced the cello to me for the first time.  Learning to play music has molded me into the person I am today.  

To illustrate what an exemplary teacher he was, after playing the cello for a period of time, Mr. Maddox actually came to my house to speak to my parents to invest in a better instrument for me, since he could tell that I had potential. He had such insight into his students.  I only hope my children are as fortunate as I was to encounter a wonderful, passionate educator such as Mr. Maddox. 

And. . . I do miss the cute cactii.   Thank you, Mr. Maddox.

Oh, I am sorry I didn't try to find Mr. Maddox until today and found he was gone.  He was my band director for two years (1962-1964) at La Jolla HS in San Diego (CA).  He was indeed both talented and humble, so humble that I didn't know he was in the Navy Band until I read his obit.  It was largely because I wanted to emulate him that I became a band director myself both in Australia and in California.  Thanks, Phil, for what you gave me.

Mr. Maddox taught me how to play the violin at Bowman Middle School. He was always kind and patient and had a passion for orchestra and music. His plant filled classroom felt as a sanctuary to me. He taught me the power of empathy when teaching. A lesson I never forgot.

Phil and I worked at Bowman Middle School for many years.  He always had a smile on his face and a kind word.  He was such a nice kind person.  May you rest in peace.

Phil and I were colleagues at Bowman MS.  He was a gentle and humble man. Anyone who spent more than five minutes with Phil knew how much he loved sharing his passion for music with his students. Mr. Maddox and I taught at Bowman Middle School.  Whenever we found the time to have a conversation, it was always about music because I loved music as much as he did. He will be missed by many.  I was privileged to have known such a nice man.

Mr. Phil Maddox was a teacher friend of mine at Bowman M. S. plus my son, Jonathan's, orchestra teacher.  When he was in 5th grade at Memorial Elementary, Phil gave Jonathan his first violin lessons at his home studio.

Mr. Maddox taught my orchestra class. I'll forever remember and appreciate his lessons.  Whenever I hear Ode to Joy, I remember Mr. Maddox. What happy memories. Music made a positive impact in my life and the lives of my peers. His passion for the art and patience for the students made Mr. Maddox the perfect instructor to facilitate that joy :)

Mr. Maddox will always have a special place in my heart.  He was a great teacher, and when I wanted to give up, he pushed that much harder.  He will be missed dearly!

Phil was always so patient with me at work, answering all of my saxophone questions.   I'm sure I asked some of those questions more than once.  I finally just made a poster with the list of sax "tips" he wrote up for me and put it on the wall.  Everyone memorized them!   He was such a mentor to me.  We'd sit at lunch and talk about old fiddle tunes and players.  He was my friend.   Heaven now has a wonderful angel.

Mr. Maddox was  my favorite teacher of all time. He cared so much for us kiddos. As an art teacher myself today, I'm am truly in awe of how much he gave of himself to his kids. I am so deeply saddened to hear of his passing.

I wanted to play drums, but my mother made me take orchestra and learn to play the violin.  Mr. Maddox was my very first teacher in 6th grade at Bowman Middle School.  He let me care for his classroom plants and taught me that violin could be a fun instrument (even if it wasn't percussion!) Now I have a 15 year old daughter that plays bass drum in our high school band, and she wanted to learn to play the violin!  I think of Mr. Maddox each time I open the case and give her a lesson.  He was a kind and gentle teacher and I will always remember him.  Family, please know he has left behind a quiet legacy.

Phil, you and Sandy were like family to me. I loved the afternoons you would come home from work and we would sit in the family room and watch Jeopardy together. I will always cherish my childhood with you. My thoughts and prayers to Sandy, and the rest of your family.

Although I haven't lived in Mtn. Grove for decades, I do remember the Maddox family name.  I am so sorry.

The study of music, musical instruments, and vocal music, can mend minds and souls, and open doors to social interactions in school, church, and the community.  Phil's teaching people to function musically, in solo, and ensemble, opened doors for social interaction for his family, and for those many whom he mentored muscially. It was a grand life experience to work with him on behalf of his great nephew, and to see the emotional maturation and musical function and community connections which were the evident results. Such gifts honor Phil's legacy of life, and live on through experiences of those he taught.  timd, organist CCLUMC

It was wonderful being in music in high school with Phillip.  I also remember how proud I was when he was in the Navy band when they performed at Pittsburg (KS) State College when I was teaching there and could tell colleagues--oh, yes, I know him!  I know that he'll do well in Heaven!

I lost my only sibling, my wonderful brother, Phil.  You were the best ever.  You always did the right thing and I was always the rebel.  How I wish I could have been more like you.  I miss you terribly.  You were so patient in teaching my autistic grandson, Jonathan, violin.  You even gave my husband some fiddle lessons but he wanted you to spend your time with him.  We loved your coming down to the lake to fish and play golf and you had such a good time.  I know you will use your musical talent in heaven, especially if one of the angels hits a wrong note.  I love you so much.

You were the best Dad a girl could ask for. You taught me to play the clarinet, ride my bike and taught me how to drive (the old manual Vega, no less). The most important thing you taught me was how to love sacrificially by your own example. Until we are together again in Heaven. I love you Daddy! Your loving daughter.

RIP Mr. Maddox. Even though I never met you, I know what a good Christian man you were through your son Chris. May God Bless you and your family during this time.
