We are heartbroken to announce that the center of our family, Gerrene Marie Virtanen, has passed away. Marie was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She left this world peacefully on June 29, 2022, at age 75.
She was born to Gerald and Irene Izzo on December 14th, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois. After graduating Bryan Adams High School in Dallas, she married her former husband and they welcomed two children, David and Laura.
Marie loved spending time in the kitchen, creating delicious meals for her family. Homemade pasta and sauce were her signature dishes. She doted on her three grandchildren, Joshua, Rowan and Laurel, showering them with getaways, gifts, and quality time. A wonderful friend, she often enjoyed long game nights of cards and dominos. She and her husband, Pert, created a successful memorabilia company in which their products were sold across the country, allowing them to enjoy their love of travel. Marie was active in the church both in Stephens Ministry and volunteering in the Library.
She is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Perttu Virtanen; son and daughter-in-law, David and Mindy Jones; grandchildren, Joshua Wright, Rowan Jones and Laurel Jones; son-in-law, David Wright; sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Ray Jett; nieces, Heather Sij and Catherine Jett; and great-nieces, Morgan Matthews, Madison Burson and Tinley Jett.
Marie is predeceased by her beloved daughter, Laura Wright, and her brother, Raphael Izzo.
A memorial service is scheduled for 10:00 AM on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at the First United Methodist Church of Allen, 601 S. Greenville Avenue, Allen Texas. We all miss her terribly, but we are so grateful for the time we had to spend with her. We will always feel her presence in our hearts and look forward to the time we see each other again.
Memorial gifts in memory of Marie should be directed to First United Methodist Church of Allen and designated for the Library.
