I love you dad. You were the smartest and most handsome man I ever knew. I miss that Twinkle in your eyes when you smiled at me. I think of you often.

On this first anniversary of Colonel Coughlin's passing, may his family and friends be filled with loving memories.  Please find comfort in knowing that others have you in their hearts too.

Hello LTC Coughlin,
You have made it to that beautiful mansion in the sky! You were an amazing man and mentor. I'm blessed to have known you as a teacher and being apart of the best JROTC program: Plano East Panther Battalion! Thank you for all the laughs at the times we needed it, for teaching us we all matter. I don't have many personal moments that I can recall because I was shy, but I do have one. I remember when it came time for picking classes for Senior year. I had to choose between art and JROTC. The art teacher said I would never become great in art and that I didn't know true art! You respectfully told her she was no Picasso and that the problem was the teacher, not the student! You then turned to me and said  "JROTC is a special art of its own... everyone that takes JROTC is a special asset and brave. You may go on to join the military or you may choose a different path, but whatever you choose, remember you are special and you have reason!" Because of you believing in me, I took JROTC senior year. You will be missed greatly and my condolences are with your family...

Col Coughlin will always have a place in my heart as a great teacher and mentor during my JROTC days at Plano East (1984) and for also entrusting me to babysit for April and Joel. He had an infectious smile and a kind heart, even when we all stood outside freezing each year for the annual Christmas parade.  ;-) My prayers of comfort and sympathy are with his family and friends.

LTC Coughlin hired me as an Instructor in June of 2001.
His tutelage, candor, wealth of knowledge, and charisma resulted in hundreds of cadets exceeding course requirements.  He explained to all that a Gold Star Unit must have cohesion.

He took student leaders on annual trips along the Texas Fort trails as a team building event packed with state history.  Once we arrived on site, curators often prompted him to teach tourists and sightseers along with our cadets. He would humbly accept before "knocking it out of the park."

Jim and Mary were the best of the best in hosting our entire District department into their home for great meals and fellowship.  Jim loved a good story and his spin on life as a Green Beret drew all in, and while it  lifted your spirit with a chuckle it  certainly amplified an understanding of servitude.

He placed his love of family at the epitome of his character and just loved, loved, loved  his family retreats to Padre Island.

I was a freshman ROTC cadet at Arlington State for school year 1960-61.  I vividly remember Jim Coughlin.  He was an outstanding example of what an Army officer should be.  May he Rest In Peace .
