Jon was my gunner when I took over the 1st Platoon, B Company, 1/77 Armor at LZ Nancy in Vietnam.  He was one of the best soldiers I ever knew.  As we progressed through our tour I gave Jon his first command of a tank when a position became available.  He led his men well and was an outstanding TC.  I later became XO of the company and was not with him when he was wounded.  What a tragedy to see a young man, so capable, lose his opportunity to continue his talents in civilian life.  God bless.

The world was a better place because of you Jon Ortmann. Your smile could light up a room. It certainly made my heart smile everytime you came my way. You were a gift to those who new you and loved you. Your country stands tall and proud because of the sacrifices you and so many others made. We shared laughter and tears together throughout the years. We had a love for each other that would stand the test of time. Although our time together was all too short, we met often in our dreams. Thank you for being a part of my life. Thank you for loving me. To Mrs. Ortmann, Nancy, Robert, and David, I send my deepest sympathy. Our lose is heavens gain.

Jon was a very special person for the CLC in Bonham. He made us laugh on a daily basis, he loved to scratch off lottery tickets. He loved his family and he loved the staff. He knew all of us by name and would even ask about children and grandchildren.  There were many times that Jon laughed at the Price is Right or the Cowboy game.  We would give him a hard time.. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I knew Jon from the age of 10 to 13 and have fond memories of him at my home and with my family in Tennessee at our family reunion. He always reminded me of  a warm and wise Jimmy Stewart kind of character when I got older, looking back. He was and continues to be my hero. That man touched more lives that he probably ever knew. I remember going to Walter Reed Hospital to see him the August after he was injured. I was 13 and it changed my life forever. I have never sung our National Anthem since then and not thought of Jon. His name should now be put on the Viet Nam Memorial in Washington DC as he was a true hero of that war and actually a POW within his own body because of that war. Well, that Prisoner of War has gone home and all that he lost he has been restored and I praise God for that.  Mrs. Ortmann, Nancy, David and Rob my sincere condolences for your loss. I meet Jon at Belmont Nursing Center in Happer Woods, MI. I was a CNA that took care of him while he was in town. He always made me laugh and had a smile from ear to ear all the time. He made my day to see him!! I told him he was my hero for what he has done for his country and how threw everything he had happened to him he still was so happy. I will never for get him!! To the family of Jon I'am sorry for your loss your in my prayers!!
