Thelma Fontilla McGehee

Thelma Fontilla McGehee, beloved wife, mother, and friend, passed away on April 30, 2026 surrounded by the love she spent her life so freely giving. Born August 31, 1927 in Van Zandt County on land settled in 1878 by her grandfather, Thelma’s roots ran deep in Texas soil, and she carried that heritage with quiet pride throughout her life.

In May of 1946, she married the love of her life, Orville McGehee. Together they built a life marked by adventure, resilience, and unwavering partnership. Their early years took them across California, Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, and Louisiana before they finally settled in Plano in 1959—a community they would call home for the rest of their lives.

Thelma was a longtime member of First Baptist Church, where she served faithfully in women’s ministries and joyfully helped with Vacation Bible School. Her service was never about recognition; it was simply who she was—someone who loved helping others in any way she could.

Her generosity extended far beyond the church walls. Thelma was a devoted supporter of the Wildcat Band Boosters and Athletic Boosters. For years, she and a group of dedicated ladies prepared sandwiches, cookies, and treats for the press box every Friday night—long after her own children had graduated. Her commitment to the Wildcats was legendary. She and Orville did not miss a football game for more than 25 years, often leaving Thanksgiving dinner early to make it to a playoff game, no matter how far the drive.

At home, Thelma found joy in the simple, beautiful things—especially gardening and tending her roses. Her flowers flourished under the same care and attention she gave to the people in her life.

Above all, Thelma was a loving and supportive mother. Her family knew her as their steady place, their encourager, and their constant source of warmth. No one could have asked for a more devoted mom.

Her legacy is one of kindness, service, and steadfast love. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all who were blessed to know her.
