Barbara Freeman Tanner, a devoted mother and cherished member of the Tampa community, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2024, at the age of 97. Born in Polk County, Florida, to Joseph M. Freeman and Edith Louise Johnson, Barbara’s early life was marked by both resilience and love. After losing her mother at a young age, she took on the responsibility of helping to raise her younger brothers, Joe and Dale Freeman.
In 1940, the family moved to the Tampa Bay area following her father’s remarriage. Barbara was known for her love of music, particularly her skill with the steel guitar, and she adored her little dog, Topsy. Her culinary talents were renowned, and anyone who enjoyed a meal at her table was in for a delightful experience.
Barbara was deeply devoted to her faith and placed her love and care for her children, family, and friends in her prayers. Her legacy of family devotion set a powerful example for all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William (Buck) Tanner, as well as three of her children: Steven (Randy) Tanner, Michael (Dale) Tanner, Edith J. (Tanner) Lineberry, and her grandson, James Roscoe Tanner II.
Barbara is survived by her five siblings: Joseph (Joe) Freeman of Brandon, FL; Dale Freeman of Jacksonville; Johnny Freeman of Tampa Bay; Carolyn Freeman; and Elaine Burke, both of Tampa Bay. She is also survived by her three sons: William (Billy) Tanner of Plant City, FL; Robert (Bobby) Tanner; and James (Jimmy) Roscoe Tanner, both of Tampa Bay, FL.
Her loving family includes eight grandchildren: Tracy Ramsey of Canton, GA; Kimberly Presley of Canton, GA; Tami Tanner of Knoxville, TN; Sean Tanner of Brandon, FL; Amy Tanner Thornton of Greenville, AL; Amber Tanner Ross of Tampa; Tiffany Tanner of Tampa; and Austin Buck Tanner of Port Orange, FL. She also leaves behind 24 great-grandchildren.
Barbara retired after 19 devoted years with the Hillsborough County School System, where she touched many lives.
A burial service will be held this Friday, August 2, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Willow Oak Baptist Church Cemetery, followed by a gathering for family and friends at Willow Oak Baptist Church, located at 3390 Willow Oak Rd, Mulberry, FL 33860, where food and refreshments will be served.
