

Joan was born on October 8, 1958, in Avon Park, Florida. She attended Avon Park High School and graduated in 1976.
After graduation, she pursued her dream of working with horses as a groom at Hobeau Farms in Ocala, Florida. She was later employed at the University of Florida in Gainesville, in the Personnel Services Dept.
Joan studied Medical Technology at Lake City Community College, Lake City, Florida and graduated in 1994. After graduation, she was employed as a Medical Lab Technologist at Primary Care Associates in Starke, Florida. She then accepted employment with LabCorp of America in Tampa, Florida, where she worked from 2002 until she retired in 2023. She and her husband were also volunteers with the Citizens Service Unit of the Pasco Sheriff’s Office since 2008.
She was an active member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Plant City, Florida. Joan liked to read and travel. She also immensely enjoyed crime and forensic science shows, as they were related to her field of employment.
Joan was predeceased by her parents, Calvin (C. Johnny) and Alice E. Johnston. She is survived by her husband, Donald R. Gammill, of Dover FL, her son, Christopher D. Althouse, of Plant City, Florida, her stepsons, Andrew S. Gammill and his wife, Alyssa, of Nixa, Missouri, and Micah L. Gammill, of Gaffney, South Carolina, her sister, LuAnne and husband, Wesley Watson, of Gainesville, Florida, her brother, John Johnston, of Gainesville, Florida, her twin brother, J. Thomas Johnston and wife Ingrid Romero, of The Villages, Florida, her niece, Sabrina Johnston Romero, of Tampa, Florida and five grandchildren.
