She was born March 13, 1927 to the late Walter and Rhoda Bryden-Smith in London, England. She had a happy childhood with her brothers; Derek and Richard (both deceased) in England until the war when her house was bombed and she often shared her stories of the terrifying air raid sirens and food rationing. After WW2 she graduated with a certificate in Occupational Therapy and at 26 years old embarked on a year internship at Ste. Hyacinthe Veterans Hospital. Here she met her wonderful husband Sidney and they were married in 1955. Shortly afterwards they had two beautiful daughters; Sally (pre-deceased) and Anne. When the girls were young, Sid and Daphne set up home in Beaurepaire.
Daphne was known for her lovely English gardens, her volunteerism which included; the library, a Brownie leader, Meals on Wheels (15 years) and the altar guild. She was forever a teacher to her girls and encouraged sports, reading, education, community involvement and travel. One of our fondest memories were our educational summer camping trips that took us all over North America, a journey to Europe as well as family exchanges to England.
Forever encouraging us to be independent Daphne went back to full time work when the girls entered high school. She worked as an Occupational Therapist at the Catherine Booth hospital for 12 years. She retired in 1984 and Sid joined her a few years later.
At this time her treasured grandchildren Tim (Liz) and Alex Nicosia entered her life followed by Michael and Katherine Leblanc. She and Sid enjoyed their retired life tremendously. The last ten years she lived at the Sunrise Beaurepaire where the caregivers became her extended family. It was during this time that she suffered the painful loss of her eldest daughter Sally. At the Sunrise she was known for her love, patience and infectious laugh. The family wishes to thank all her wonderful and compassionate caregivers.
Daphne inspired us all to live life to the fullest, and was a very caring and loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She will be missed by Anne, Pierre, her wonderful grandchildren and great grandchildren (Joe, Patrick and Maeve) as well as her extended family.
Visitation to be held at Collins-Clark in Pointe-Claire, Friday Nov 8, 2019 7-9pm and the funeral will be held at Christ Church, 455 Church St. Beaconsfield, Saturday Nov 9, 2019 10am
In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to Nova or the West island Palliative Care Center.
