Dorothy was born on the family farm in Lorne Valley, Prince Edward Island, the third oldest of 7 children to Annie & Malcolm MacLeod. She is survived by her three loving children, Wayne, Steve and Terry. She will be missed by her grandchildren Christopher, Patrick, Matthew, Jake, Benjamin, Renee, Michelle and great grandchild Malcolm. Also, brother Palmer, sister-in-law Shirley, nieces, nephews and many friends.
Dorothy left PEI at 18 and moved to Montreal where she first worked as a secretary. During WW2, she served with the British Secret Service in New York City. Her duties included decoding messages which were transmitted from behind enemy lines in Europe.
After the war, she returned to Montreal where she met and married Morley Markell. They both worked together in the insurance industry and a number of years later, Dorothy formed her own brokerage firm, the Dott Markell Insurance Agency. Owning her own insurance brokerage was considered a major achievement for a woman at that time.
Dorothy was an active parishioner with the The Salvation Army Montreal Citadel Church. For many years she was a member of a professional womens’ organization, the Zonta Club of Montreal.
We would like to thank Sabrina, Brenda and the wonderful staff at the Manoir Beaconsfield for the excellent care provided. The kindness shown to the entire family will never be forgotten.
Dorothy always had a love for PEI and her heritage. She will be laid to rest later this summer beside her parents in the Lorne Valley cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations to the Salvation Army Montreal Citadel Family Church or Alzheimer’s society would be appreciated.
