Mary Evelyn Case (née Petch), fondly known as ‘Rink’ went to heaven peacefully on Tuesday, February 27th, 2018 at Résidence Vivalis (Pointe-Claire). She was born in Hemmingford, Quebec on September 19th, 1917. Evelyn’s heritage stems from Petch Orchards, hence self admittedly perhaps the key to her longevity, apples. She earned a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from McGill in 1939, and went on to a successful career at Bell Canada, where she even calculated the budget for Bell longhand before computers. Evelyn proudly served a position with the ESU (English-Speaking Union of Canada Montreal Branch) for decades. She was a long-time member of St. John The Baptist Anglican Church (Pointe-Claire) and served on the Alter Guild well into her 90’s. She loved music and the fine arts, and delighted in participating and contributing to McGill University, local museums and art galleries, and a multitude of charities. Evelyn loved watching figure skating, and enjoyed sports immensely; especially baseball, hockey, and football, calling any play faster than the announcer. She traveled around the world extensively, as well as to the West Coast twice a year to visit her BC family in summer and wintertime. One of her earlier trips she took a steam train West, and traveled on a diesel-electric back East. She was a natural historian, loved the colour red, could name every flower and plant by Latin name, believed in dessert with every meal, loved a challenging crossword, and a good joke, and was not shy to enjoy a tasty burger, and a little wine or gin. Her talks, humour, and laughter over tea will be missed by so many. She never forgot a date, not a birthday, anniversary… anything. Evelyn was so grateful her mind never went ‘to the tweeters’, feeling blessed to have lived on her own unassisted until she was 100. Evelyn is survived by her beloved grandchildren, Joy Case (Greg Clark) of Vernon, BC, Angela Ryll (Dave) of Vernon, BC, Roselyn Minnes (Brad) of Didsbury, AB, and Donna Case of Calgary, AB; her cherished great-grandchildren, Abigail & Anneliese Minnes, and Declan Ryll; her dear sisters-in-law, Carol Laurie Petch, and Ruth Graham Petch. Much loved Aunt of Chandler Petch (Rita), Christopher ‘Kip’ Petch (Shelley), William Petch (Joy), Mary (Richard Ellerton), Pamela (Gary Skeele), Timothy Petch (Pamela), Norah Rae (Ken), Carole Baker (Terry), Tim Nobes (Carolyn), Barbara LeBlanc (Leo), Glen Nobes (Nathalie), and countless cousins, great nephews and nieces, and even a precious great-great nephew that delighted her in her last months. She was predeceased, by her beloved husband, Donald Case (Sr) in 1972; her dear stepson, Donald Case (Jr) (the late Regina Case); her parents, Charles Edgar Petch & Evelyn Marshall Petch; her brothers Charles Petch (the late Katherine Ann Chandler), and Robert Petch, and her sister, Anne Beckett (the late Garth Beckett). The Petch, Marshall, and Case families will deeply miss their legendary ‘Rink’. As per Evelyn’s request, there will be no visitation or service. A private family interment will take place in Hemmingford at a later date. Funeral services taken care of by Collins Clarke MacGillivray White. Special thanks to the care staff at Résidence Vivalis, and especially to her long-time neighbours and devoted friends since 1974, Hugh & Joyce Farthing. In lieu of flowers, please support NOVA West Island by making a donation in memory of Evelyn Case; Tel: 514-695-8335 [email protected] or to the charity of your choice.
