It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Hugh Gordon Stanley Bennett, September 11th, 2014. Hugh passed away peacefully. He was in his 88th year. Born in Toronto on May 1st 1927, he spent much of his childhood in the St Clair Ave East neighbourhood in the district of Moore Park. Upon graduating from Shaw Business College in 1947, he spent a short time working at the Toronto Credit Bureau before finding career employment with the Toronto Board of Education in 1948. He met his wife Adrienne in his teen years during World War II. They wed in 1951 and settled in Agincourt, Scarborough. They raised four children and lived comfortably in the same home on Dempster Street for 63 years.
Hugh retired from the Board in 1978 and established a first aid training business. Indulging a lifelong passion for historical information he also became a member of the Ontario Genealogy Society and spent years researching his family tree and its various marital strings. He found time to publish his initial volume of research in 1997, when he was not relaxing at his cottage in Sundridge Ontario. This past year, he and Adrienne settled into a retirement residence in Beaconsfield QC, to be closer to family when he took ill in the summer. Hugh was hospitalized in Montreal in July and never recovered from his ailments.
Hugh Bennett leaves behind his wife Adrienne, son Paul (wife Wendy) and daughters Victoria (husband Scott) and Cynthia (husband Paul), and son in law Frank. He was predeceased by his fourth child, Andrea in 2010, his mother Winifred May in 1973 and father Stanley Wilfred in 1927. Hugh Bennett also leaves nine grandchildren, Robert, Nikita, Kevin, Alison, Emily, Samantha, Kaitlin, Scott and Michael and three great grandchildren Bennett, Easton and Brooke, and nephews Gary and Greg, niece Adrienne, cousins and many friends.
