Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt & great aunt. Kind and grateful for life, generous, forgiving, cheerful in adversity, sorrowed by injustice. Always seeking the betterment of others. So very brave when all alone.
Isobel Maclean Ballantyne (née Menzies), aged 91, of Pointe Claire, Quebec, peacefully breathed her last on April 28th, 2024 at Mount Sinai Hospital in Montreal. She was with family and a close friend.
Isobel was born May 25,1932 to Maribel (née McInnes) and Duncan Menzies in Aberfeldy, Perthshire, Scotland. Maribel was a school teacher, Duncan a sheep farmer. Isobel excelled in school, both letters and athletics. Being raised on farms in Aberfeldy, she retained a life-long love of animals, fresh air, calculated labour and open countryside.
Following secretarial studies in Edinburgh, Isobel first worked at the Northern and Western General Hospitals, local centres. From here she was invited by Dr. K.T. MacFarlane of McGill University to assist his private practice in Montreal, Canada. In 1959 Isobel married Ernest Harold Ballantyne, (b. Dalkeith, Scotland) at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Cartierville, Mtl. From the church, they drove to Florida where Ernest was contracted by the aerospace industry at Cape Canaveral. Later returning to Montreal, they moved to Pointe Claire in 1964. Before starting a family Isobel was engaged for a season as secretary with Hillsdale Golf Club, Mirabel.
Isobel and Ernest had 2 children, Alexander Gordon and Elizabeth Catherine. Isobel loved all things Scottish, animals great & small, the outdoors, travel with friends, and spending time with family at the Laurentian log cottage near Ste. Marguerite. She especially enjoyed reuniting with family on Scottish soil. She found great pleasure and rest in visiting the flowers of her garden and walking the parks of Lac St. Louis. She volunteered where she found need; Cedar Park Home & School, Canadian Power Squadron, Liberal parties federal & provincial.
Isobel is predeceased by Maribel and Duncan Menzies and by her sister Sarah Jean Menzies (Low). She is greatly missed by Ernest, Gordon and Elizabeth (Rev. Dr. Scott Hunter), grandchildren Kaitlyn and Brendan Hunter, and grand niece, Susannah Clinker. Also by nieces Lesley Low, and Jennifer (Low) Smith (Geoff).
The family is grateful for the wonderful and devoted caregivers who graced Mum's last months and eased her to her rest. Thank you especially Nikki, Lillieth and Myra.
A service will be held on Tuesday June 4th, 11 a.m., at St John the Baptist Church, 233 Sainte Claire, Pointe Claire, H9S 4E3, The Reverend Trevor Potter presiding.
