Jan Vrana passed away on September 29th, 2020 leaving behind his loving wife, Anne, five children Milan, Peter, Annik, Michelle and Alexis, son-in-Law Chris Bagshaw, daughter-in-Law Annie Dionne, and two grandchildren, Zachary and Estelle.
Jan, known to close family as Honza, escaped communist Czechoslovakia and came to Canada during a snowstorm in March of 1974. He spoke no English or French, and all he had with him were the clothes on his back, a cookbook and a few dollars. In 1975, he met a beautiful Czech woman, Anne Novak, on a blind date and together they would go on to raise five wonderful children that he adored. He had a deep bond with each of them and loved to say, “My kids and my wife are my best friends”.
In 1978, he was accepted to McGill University’s Structural Engineering program, graduating in 1983, at the top of his class, with a Master’s degree. He went on to become a highly respected, sought after, Engineer and Professor who was known for being passionate, innovative and diligent.
Dad was happiest when on ski hills with his kids, hiking mountains, or building something – hurricane proof, of course – at his cottage in Vermont. Having been a voracious reader his entire life, learning about anything that piqued his curiosity, he accumulated an exceptional depth of knowledge in numerous topics. He could debate anyone – anyone who tried to, that is – in politics, history, the environment and economics. He had a great sense of humor, inserting jokes at every opportunity, and repeating it whenever it got a laugh, which it often did. Over the years dad formed great and lasting friendships with relatives, colleagues and individuals, that he highly cherished.
He will always be remembered for being adventurous, brilliant, practical, humble, a bit rebellious and for living his life to the fullest. He believed in freedom, taking responsibility for your actions and lived by the motto of “live free or die”. This permeated into his everyday actions and allowed him to build the legacy he leaves behind.
He will be terribly missed.
The Vrana family perfectly understands that some friends and family will not be attending the visitation due to the on-going Covid situation. No worries.
