The Haberl family sadly announces that we have lost our brother, son, uncle, cousin, nephew, friend and colleague Joe. He arrived just in time for New Year’s Eve 1957 as a very tiny baby. He grew into a big guy, but the biggest growth was in his heart – he was well known for his great big smile, generosity and finding the laugh in the moment.
Growing up, Joe was part of a big family and circle of friends in Pointe Claire, Québec. He was a middle child, math-smart, early mini-Loto winner, who loved Bishopton, Lake Barron, Kaslo, family reunions, Toastmasters, old movies, Nero Wolfe books, Grandpa Seng, puns and jokes, Paul Reid’s Christmas and gifting with Stokes stuff. Joe was proudly (and sometimes stubbornly) independent, and was known to argue a point on occasion, somehow finding ways to get a word in edgewise amongst his siblings.
Joe particularly loved his family, especially our late mother Margie (whom he visited often at her grave) and his nieces and nephews. He will be remembered by his father John (Murielle Parkes), siblings Richard, Peter (Ginny Harel), Louise (Dan Getachew), Christine and Andy (Julie Bourret) and next-gens Leslie, Monica, Al, David, Paul and Sam. We’ll miss Joe very much, but are delighted for him that he can now party hearty up there with Margie and assorted uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.
Joe was also a valued member of the Stokes company family for over 45 years. From the Stokes folks: “[Joe left] an indelible mark with his loyalty, hard work and dedication. His good-natured spirit brought a lot of smiles to our workplace, he always had a joke on hand to cheer us up. While his presence will be deeply missed, we will hold onto the cherished memories of him in our hearts.” We want to thank his Stokes family for being such an important part of his life.
The Jewish General Hospital was there with compassionate care many times for Joe over many years. Along with them, Joe also supported the Gazette Christmas Fund. Please consider these along with cardiac, diabetic and obesity research charities should you wish to donate in his memory.
We invite you to join us on Friday, November 15th, 2024 at the Church of Saint John the Baptist, 233 St. Claire Avenue in Pointe Claire, Quebec, from 1015 onward to offer condolences and remember Joe. At 11, there will be a non-denominational celebration of Joe’s life in the chapel, followed by a small get-together from Noon to 2pm. Please share your memories of Joe at Joseph Haberl Obituary - Pointe-Claire, QC found under https://www.dignitymemorial.com/en-ca/obituaries.
Sincerest thanks to the wonderful people at H. Gregoire Vaudreuil, the paramedics, and the staff at the Lakeshore General Hospital for their unbelievable compassion and caring assistance at the time of Joe’s passing.
