She led a long and full life - she studied Occupational Therapy at Westminster Hospital in the United Kingdom (where she met her lifelong friend Val). Soon after she emigrated to Canada and taught briefly at McGill University. In 1958 she met and married Alan Perodeau, had two children and put her career to rest.
My grandmother was a "doer" in life. She was an avid gardener and spent many years as a palliative volunteer visitor with the VON . She was athletic and played tennis for many years at a local club. Later she joined the Rug Hooking Guild and produced some beautiful rugs that were quickly claimed by both of her daughters. She had a great appreciation for the arts and enjoyed listening to opera music and my piano recitals of classical music.
My grandmother was a well-loved woman as she was bright, modest, kind and a great listener. My aunt often laughs how when my grandmother went to visit her, my aunt's friends invited my grandmother out for coffee and asked my aunt to stay home, saying "we only need Sally".
My grandmother was graced with beautiful friends and neighbours that looked out for her in her later years. She really enjoyed the camaraderie of her friends at their Monday Mahjong sessions. When my grandmother's mobility became challenged these special ladies moved the sessions to one of the homes where she did not need to climb stairs.
My grandmother appreciated the caring and kindness of those around her and before she went to the hospital, she telephoned each one to say that she loved them.
My grandmother taught me a lot of things, but two that stand out are "manners maketh man" and saying "thank you". She was full of love and shared many of life's lessons that I will carry into my later years.
Our family would like to express their sincere appreciation to: Dr. Eric Lillie for his outstanding care; Ana, the CLSC nurse, whose care defines the word compassionate; the amazing caregivers that enabled her to stay at home; Bayshore Home Health and Affinity Health. A very special thank you to Winsome, Avril, Dalwin, Risikat, and Salama who kept her comfortable.
Finally, thanks to Karie, Linda and Lydia for keeping a beautiful smile on her face.
"Farewell my dear grandmother and thank you for the memories" - Dante
In lieu of flowers should anyone desire, her favourite charity was the VON.
