

Alfred Wayne Calhoun, affectionately known as Al, was born on June 27, 1951, in Frankfurt, Germany. He received his early education at Fairview High School and went on to pursue higher education at Texas College in Tyler, Texas, followed by graduate studies at North Texas State University in Denton, Texas.
Al began his professional journey in 1974 with U.S. Steel Oil Well in Garland, Texas, serving as a cost accountant. His dedication and talent led to a transfer to U.S. Steel Supply in Chicago, Illinois. After a successful decade in the steel industry, Al transitioned into the healthcare field, where he found his true calling in service and leadership.
He served as a manager at Ivy Tech College in Gary, Indiana, and later at the Lake County Department of Public Welfare. His leadership and passion for community service led to his recruitment as Vice President of Operations for Lakeshore Health System in East Chicago, Indiana. He later held key positions as a health administrator for the Gary Health Department and in management at Gary Community Mental Health.
After a remarkable career spanning education, public service, and health care, Al relocated to Pompano Beach, Florida. There, he embarked on a successful 25-year career in the sales industry, culminating in his retirement from Walmart in 2022.
Al's life was marked by a strong work ethic, a heart for service, and a commitment to making a difference in every community he served. He will be remembered for his kindness, leadership, and unwavering dedication to helping others.
After decades of service in education and health care, Al relocated to Pompano Beach, Florida, where he embarked on a second career in sales. He worked with distinction in the industry for 25 years and retired from Walmart in 2022.
In 1980, Al married the love of his life, Sandy (Newsome), and together they built a life rooted in love, family, and faith. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, cousin, and friend.
Al was preceded in death by his father, Robert Lee Calhoun, Sr.; his mother, Octeria Valjean Edmond; and his brother, Robert Lee Calhoun, Jr.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his beloved wife, Sandy Calhoun; daughter, Shandra (Jason) of Charleston, SC; son, Jon Calhoun of South Bend, IN; and his cherished grandchildren: Laila, London, and Jaxon of Charleston, SC. He is also survived by his brothers, Dr. Ron Calhoun (Loretta); and Joseph Calhoun; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers and sisters in-law, and countless friends whose lives he touched deeply.
Al will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his unwavering dedication to family and community, and his quiet strength. His legacy of love, leadership, and service will live on in all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will take place at Kraeer Funeral Home @ Forest Lawn Funeral Home, located at 200 West Copans Road, Pompano Beach, FL 33064, on June 16, 2025, from 10:30 am to 11:30 am.
The funeral service will follow at the same venue on June 16, 2025, from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm.
