He was 1 of 10 children. Coming from very humble circumstances, he began working at an early age in order to help support his younger siblings. For many years he farmed and helped his brother sell their produce at a market - all while going to school. Hardworking and ambitious, after finishing high school, he continued farming and got a second job as a bookkeeper.
In 1965, David and his friend were walking by 2 pretty girls at school. He locked eyes with a beautiful brown-eyed girl named Rasheeda and blew her a kiss. From that day on, as he put it, there was no one else good enough for him. It was the beginning of a 54-year relationship.
After Rasheeda left for New York in 1967, David changed his plans of going to Canada to follow her there. Two years later they were married.
From the moment he arrived in NY, he began working in the garment industry for clothing manufacturers. He would go on to manage their shipping departments for over 30 years. Working during the day and going to school at night, David earned his college degree in Accounting in 1972.
Over the years, David and Rasheeda worked hard to achieve the American dream and provide for their daughters Malissa and Ralisa. They bought their first house in Queens in 1979 and David, handy and a quick learner, renovated the entire house on his own.
He was an avid flower and vegetable gardener, growing lots of hot peppers to make hot sauce that family and friends grew to eagerly expect each year for Christmas. He loved cooking and especially baking - always making cheesecakes, pies and cakes. His Christmas banana bread was another treat that everyone came to anticipate.
David loved sports, couldn’t pass up a good crime show and had a special interest in politics. He was handsome, intelligent and witty. Everyone that knew him liked him and it’s been said over and over that he was a good man.
He is survived by his mother who is 95 years young, 6 siblings, his wife Rasheeda, their 2 daughters Malissa and Ralisa, and their spouses Deborah and Sal. Most of all he will be missed by his favorite grandpuppy Adi.
During his life, David gave his heart to the Lord and was baptized. We have the complete assurance that we will see him again one day!
