

Dimitra was born Kandila in the western part of Aetolia-Acarnania, Greece to Ioannis and Aphroditi Ligonis on March 20, 1943. She married Dimitrios Bakas on June 17, 1973 and they moved to Tarpon Springs, Florida together shortly after being married. Together they had a daughter, Irene Tsingelis.
Dimitra was a loving grandmother that raised her two beautiful granddaughters that were her entire life. She became a yiayia to all the community children. Dimitra was also a devoted Orthodox Christian. She worked as a caretaker at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Tarpon Springs before moving to South Florida to be with her daughter and family. In South Florida she was active in the St. Demetrios community.
Dimitra is preceded in death by her parents Ioannis and Aphroditi Ligonis, her husband Dimitrios Bakas and her brother Andreas Ligonis.
Dimitra is survived by her daughter and son-in- law Petros and Irene Tsingelis; her brother Stathis and Katina Ligonis; her sister Olga Grivas; her granddaughters Athena and Dimitra Tsingelis; and several nephews, nieces, cousins and in-laws both her in the US and in Greece.
Visitation and church funeral services for Dimitra Bakas will be held on Friday, June 24, 2022 at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church 820 NE 14th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304. Visitation will be from 9:30 am – 10:30 am and funeral service to start at 10:30 am.
Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens North 200 West Copans Road, Pompano Beach, FL 33064. Arrangements are by Kraeer Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers (at the wishes of Dimitra Bakas) donations in her memory can be made to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church 820 NE 14th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304.
