Evelyn was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on October 20, 1927, to Rose and William Gluck. The family later moved to Larchmont, New York. Evelyn attended Mamaroneck High School, where she proudly graduated as valedictorian of her class. She then attended Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. Her first year in college, she met the love of her life, Jerome Lerner, when attending the wedding of her good friend, Selma, Jerome's sister. Evelyn and Jerome married in September, 1947, and then moved to Chicago where Jerome attended law school. Jerome and Evelyn later moved to the suburb, Skokie, where they enjoyed their work, travels, rearing their three children, and keeping up with close friends and relatives.
Jerome and Evelyn moved from Skokie to Northbrook in 1984. There, Evelyn volunteered at the local TV station and created TV programming using her expert videography skills. Evelyn also worked passionately on civic and political campaigns, including a local campaign to ban handguns. Evelyn enjoyed folk dancing, videography and writing short stories about her life and travels. She enjoyed visiting family, spending time with her grandchildren and the yearly trips she took with Jerome to Hawaii where she added hula to her dancing repertoire. After several wonderful winters in Hawaii, Jerome and Evelyn decided to follow in the footsteps of many dear friends and relatives and became "snow birds" in Florida and eventually relocated to Florida year-round. While in Florida, Evelyn enjoyed reading and watching old movies, especially after the nightly news became too frustrating to watch. Evelyn was politically active (proud Democrat) and even voted in the 2020 primary.
Evelyn Lerner is preceded in death by her husband, Jerome Lerner, and is survived by her children, David Lerner (Naomi Steinberg), Karen Lerner (John Moffat) and Robert Lerner (Debby). She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Sarah Lerner (Greg Neumann), Steven Lerner (Danielle), Lisa (Michael) Counts, Daniel Moffat (Caitlin Gillespie) and Kenneth Moffat (Tori); great-grandchildren, Natalie and Hannah Lerner, Cecilia Moffat; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Donations can be made in her honor to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, the Chicago Botanic Garden or a charity of your choice.
