Florence Zipora Cohen, was born in Israel to Lithuanian parents. She died at 88 in Sunrise, Florida on Friday the 09th of September, 2011. Florence is survived by her three children: Isabella, Susan and William, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Florence's family moved to the US when she was 9 months old, moved back to Israel and returned to the US permanently when she was 14 years old. Florence's early exposure to different cultures contributed to her tolerance for differing perspectives and lifestyles. She was passionate about respect for people whose needs varied from those of the community at large.
Florence enjoyed traveling, scrabble, painting, crafts of all kinds and, most of all, helping people.
In 1995, Florence began assisting at the Peer Center as a volunteer. There, she opened a thrift shop to raise funds for the Peer Center. The shop did raise funds; however, it was well known that Florence "gifted" items to those in need.
Florence's social conscience and altruism continued in her association with Silver Impact, Inc., which began as a part of the Peer Center. Florence was an active member of the Board of Directors, and tirelessly gave her time and made in-kind as well as financial contributions.
Florence also volunteered her time at area hospitals and regularly assisted people at the Learning Center for the Visually Impaired.
