Boca Raton, Florida
It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of James
“Jim” Maurice Joyce, who departed this life on April 14, 2025, at the age of 90. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and talented electrical engineer, Jim leaves behind a profound legacy of family devotion.
Born on July 13, 1934 in Detroit, Michigan to James Francis Joyce and Katherine Mullen, immigrants from Ireland, the second of five children. Jim entered the U.S. Army in 1957, and served at the Presidio in San Francisco. His time in the service afforded him the opportunity to pursue to a college education through the GI Bill.
Jim was the first in his family to attain a college degree. He graduated from the University of Detroit Mercy in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering – though his father loved to call him an “electrician”! Jim worked for IBM as an engineer for more than 30 years. Most notably in the 60s-70s in Huntsville Alabama, as a contractor from IBM he designed the power subsystem for the Apollo, and Skylab spacecraft. He became the technical trouble shooter at other NASA contractor locations and contributed to many major NASA programs. Then he moved to Boca Raton where parts of his design of the IBM PC power supply is still in use today in many PC’s. Jim concluded his career with IBM in Boca Raton, holding patents on at least 14 of his inventions.
Jim married the love of his life, Dorothy Ann Lake, on August 12th, 1961. Together they shared a marriage of 51 years, and three children. In their retirement years, Jim and Ann traveled globally and visited their children and eight grandchildren. Jim was also an avid sailor and enjoyed sailing off the Florida coast and with college friends on Chesapeake Bay and Lake Michigan.
Jim had a true Irish spirit along with a deep sense of loyalty, generosity and unwavering commitment to his family. He championed the value of education, supporting the academic pursuits of his children and grandchildren. He was always ready to provide support, love and a helping hand.
Jim is survived by his children, Bob Joyce (wife Vanessa), Dan Joyce (wife Latha) and Joanne McCarter (husband Kevin); his grandchildren Kevin Joyce, Eric Joyce, Kiran Joyce, Nikhil Joyce, Julia SanGiovanni Nangle, Mark SanGiovanni, Matthew SanGiovanni and Christopher SanGiovanni; his brother Frank Joyce and sister Elaine Joyce. He is also survived by step grandchildren, and several extended family members, friends and fellow parishioners of St. Joan of Arc who will forever cherish his memory. He is reunited with his beloved wife Ann, his parents Jim and Kitty, and his sisters Kathleen and Peggy.
A service to honor and celebrate Jim’s life will be held on May 12, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Joan of Arc Chapel.
Though he is no longer with us in body, Jim’s spirit, values and the profound impact he had on those around him will endure. His was a life well lived and deeply loved, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
And rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the hollow of His hand
