He was born February 20, 1930 in Danbury, Connecticut to Joseph Charles Carroll and Catherine Hannan Carroll who preceded him in death. He was a member of the class of 1947 of Bethel High School where he was a popular member of student government. He sometimes helped his father with Buick car sales. Upon graduation, his father bought him a work truck and he made a good living at a young age, being hired as "truck and driver" for $ 3.50 per hour. Joseph was a Sergeant First Class in the United States Army, with the 43rd Infantry Division, serving in Augsburg, Germany. Back home, he won the heart of his childhood love, Corinne Dolan. They married in 1957 and began a dedicated family life which included four children.
Joe was often two steps ahead in life and was methodical in pursuing his dreams. He and Corinne moved to Lighthouse Point, Florida in 1964, and Joe traveled around Broward County, selling International Harvester trucks. A few months after coming to Florida, he welcomed their youngest child Jennifer, who was his comfort and company in the hour of his death. He became a stockbroker and bond salesman and worked for Hayden Stone in Lighthouse Point and E.F. Hutton in Pompano Beach. He moved into banking, and sold the first shares of stock when Florida banking regulations were changed to allow securities trading. He completed his career as a broker for Summit Brokerage in Boca Raton and Stock Depot in Delray Beach.
His family traveled regularly, going on weekend boat trips with the Seabird Yacht Club in their boat "Ticojejo". In the station wagon, a.k.a. "The Yellowbird", and in the Suburban and a rented Winnebago, the family went to the Florida Keys and Disney World, traveled up the entire U.S. east coast, and made many round trips for college dorm move-ins. Joe and Corinne also enjoyed fun adventures to favorite places such as Lake Tahoe, Las Vegas, Nashville, Branson, and Hiawassee, Georgia. At home, Joe drove his beautiful Plymouth Barracuda convertible to boat shows, breakfast at the yacht basin, and just "muggin' around" with his weekend cigar.
He was a fan of patriotic music and country music, especially Tennessee Ernie Ford. He sometimes treated his kids to spontaneous patriotic concerts, playing an LP for them on his record player. He was proud of his children and deeply interested in the lives of his grandchildren. Able bodied and of good mind and spirit, he was assisted in his final year by his wife Corinne, his daughter Cori, and the family caregiver, Angela Lawrence. A true gentleman with a sweet wit, he made new friends and kept the old.
Joseph was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, a founding member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Lighthouse Point, a founding member of the Wellness Center at Holy Cross Hospital, a member of St. Gabriel's Men's Club, and a former member of The Hundred Club of Broward County.
He is predeceased by his son Timothy Carroll, brother J. Robert Carroll and sister Mary Beth Mihm. Joseph is survived by his loving wife Corinne D. Carroll; daughters Cori Carroll and Jennifer (Stephen) Doerr, son Joseph (Theresa) Carroll; grandchildren Jennifer, Joseph, Joshua, Jeremiah, Catherine, Justin, and Patrick. Great grandchildren include Hannah, Rebekah, Bethany, Leah, Esther, Zechariah, Iliana, Roxanna, Evelyn, and Annabelle. He also leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am on Saturday, March 10, 2018 by his friend Fr. Tony Mulderry at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Pompano Beach. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the charity of one's choosing. Think of Joseph when the sun is shining and Irish eyes are smiling, as his so often were.
