

Dr. Kwang-Jae Joh was born to Joh Jum Yong and Kwak Sun-Yi in Daegu, South Korea on May 30, 1934. The fifth child of six, he was their second son. He grew up in Daegu and always had a strong desire to help the sick. He served his country as a medic in the army during the Korean War. His family was not wealthy, but with perseverance and hard work, he was able to make his way through medical school, completing his studies at Kyungpook National University in 1961. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1968 and finished his general surgery residency at Germantown Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA in 1973.
He met his future wife, Haun-Ja Chung, and shortly thereafter, they were married in New York on February 11, 1978. They moved to Lighthouse Point, FL to start and raise their family. He opened his own surgical practice and worked mainly at North Broward Medical Center, in addition to Cypress Hospital, Imperial Point Medical Center, and Holy Cross Hospital. He retired after dedicating 35 years of unwavering service to his patients and community.
Dr. Joh enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was also a prominent and well-respected member of his church. He loved playing golf, fishing, and playing Baduk during his free time. He is survived by his wife, Haun-Ja, his two sisters, Joh Jung Sook and Joh Jung Oak, his three daughters, Jean, Jennifer, and Julia, and his nine grandchildren, Amelia, Kian, Liam, Ava, Tabitha, Quinn, Rowan, Sylvie, and Gavin.
There will be a gathering of family and friends at Kraeer Funeral Home/Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Pompano Beach, FL on February 24, 2024 at 1:00 pm. Services will be held at 2:00 pm, conducted by Pastor Steven Jhu.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to the Korean Presbyterian Church of Miami.
