Art was predeceased by his parents Anton & Hedwig, infant son, Bernie, and wife Mary as well as many family members including Harry, Hans, Phyllis, Ngaire, Mary, George, Steven, Gino, Rob, Wim, Franz, and Tony.
He is survived by his children - Jacky, Glenn (Marnie), Chris (Terri-Ann), Greg (Saskia), Arthur (Elizabeth), grandchildren - Angus (Olena), Kieran, Angela (James), Christina (Alex), Tim, Nathaniel (Drew), Jonah (Emily), Sam, Dominic, Isaac, and his two great-granddaughters Avila and Stella. Art is also survived by his siblings Anna Marie, Fritzi (Conrad), Effie, Estrelita, and many nieces and nephews.
In 1952, Art immigrated to Canada with his parents and siblings. After living a short while in Nanaimo, he moved to Port Alberni and with $20 in his pocket, opened his own upholstery shop, Wynans’ Furniture in 1955. In 1963, he married Mary Roozendaal, and they soon began raising children and becoming involved in the community. He was very proud of his Dutch heritage, but even more proud to call himself a Canadian.
Art loved his Lord Jesus, his family, and his community! If he wasn’t at the furniture shop upholstering someone’s favorite couch or chair, he was serving the people of his community in some capacity.
Art served as an Alderman for the City of Port Alberni for many years. He was a founding charter member of the Kiwanis Club of Port Alberni. With the Kiwanis Club, he was involved in many service and fundraising projects, the most notable was the founding of the Port Alberni Salmon Festival! For nearly 50 years, he could be found on Labor Day Weekend barbequing fish alongside his family at the World-Famous Kiwanis Salmon BBQ using the “secret sauce” recipe he helped create. An avid cyclist, Art at age 61, cycled across Canada in a fundraising effort for the Kiwanis International and UNICEF: Eliminating Iodine Deficiency Disorders Worldwide Campaign.
