It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Annemarie. She passed away peacefully, with family by her side, on Saturday, March 14, 2026 at Ty Watson House, Port Alberni. This horrible disease, an aggressive bulbar ALS took her from us far too soon. She had to navigate getting her affairs in order while dealing with this devastating disease process, and she did so with strength, grace and gratitude for each day. She appreciated each and every kindness shown to her, a thank you and the warmest, longest hug and a kiss on the cheek. She gave us the strength to see her onto her next journey.
Annemarie was born on March 31, 1971 in Thompson, Manitoba to Rose and Bert Sather. Bert and Rose moved to Gimli, MB shortly after Annemarie’s birth, and later to Stonewall, MB before moving west to Dawson City, Yukon, and then to beautiful Vancouver Island.
Annemarie moved to Port Alberni in 2016. She had to consider a change in her hairdressing career when she became allergic to the chemicals in hair products. This was an opportunity for a new vocation, helping others through their healing journey. She went on to work with both the PASS Shelter and Port Alberni Friendship Centre. Annemarie was an advocate for those less fortunate, the unhoused and people with mental health, and at times, substance misuse. Annemarie offered guidance, empowerment and hope. As a Human Service worker, she believed all people had worth and strove to build bridges while celebrating even the smallest of accomplishments. Annemarie never passed an opportunity to help or show compassion; she will be remembered for her countless hours and kindness providing haircuts to those in need.
Annemarie was known for her love of nature, and believed in the healing power of a walk in the forest. She loved kayaking, hiking and photographing nature. She also was a very talented artist/creator - drawing, painting and crafting. She had a passionate love of gemstones and crystals, with wonderful displays of her ever changing favourites; at work on her Zen table, in her home, and finally, bringing the magic to her room at Ty Watson House.
She leaves to cherish her memory; parents, Rose and Bert Sather, son Alexander (Sam), grandchildren Josie and Quinn, brother Rudy (Brittany) Sather, nephews, Ty (Breanne) (Autumn), Dakota (Brittany) (Clover), her beloved cat Merlin, many aunts, uncles, cousins and a wide circle of friends and extended family who loved her dearly. She was preceded in death by her older brother, Albert (7), grandparents Rudy and Desiree Streit, and Thor and Yvonne Sather, her beloved aunt Lorraine Styba and her Streit uncles, Randy, Ernie, Gody, and Hank.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Woodley and the hospice team, the nursing staff of Port Alberni Community Health, the ALS Foundation, and the wonderful staff of Ty Watson House for their compassion and care of Annemarie through this journey.
A celebration of Annemarie’s life will be held at the Port Alberni Friendship Center on Saturday, March 21 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Annemarie’s memory to Port Alberni Friendship Center, Alberni Hospice/Ty Watson House, BC ALS Foundation, or a charity of your choosing, to continue her legacy of healing and kindness.
