Jimmy made an unscripted final curtain call on Saturday October 1st, 2021. Ironically, this was the day the Puntledge River opened for the Chum fishery which is one of the most anticipated days of the fishing season for him.
Jimmy was born in Kingston, Ontario but at the age of 10 his mother moved the 3 siblings to Belfast. Jimmy was the big brother to Donny and Bonnie.
At the age of 26, Jimmy emigrated to Canada, arriving with little more than the clothes on his back and the company of good friends. He arrived in Victoria after an adventurous trip across Canada, and had to sleep under the Cameron Band stand in Beacon Hill Park using the park fountains to wash up in. Thankfully Jimmy carried with him the luck of the Irish and landed a job in the shipyards shortly after his arrival.
Jimmy's life in Victoria was nothing short of fun and adventure. The antics arising from his house and roommates on 5th street became the stuff of legends. Fishing was his passion and he freely shared his expertise with novices he took out in his boat and on the rivers. Jane liked to say that he had gills behind his ears and they flared in anticipation when there was a fishery opening..
Jimmy met Jane through a mutual friend in the summer of 2001. After an instant connection and shared love of the outdoors, they spent the next 20 years on adventures; enjoying a calendar-filled life of fishing, and more fishing, camping, dragon boating, pickleball, tennis, golfing, travelling, kayaking and fishing some more. After his retirement in 2010,winters were spent in Arizona at Carriage Manor Resort, an adult summer camp filled with many activities and new amazing friends who were a new audience for him. Here Jimmy was a treasured actor guaranteed to make everyone laugh.
Jimmy is known for his storytelling and the stories always got better and better each time he told them. And if there was Guiness in the telling---- his Irish accent got stronger and stronger. Jimmy thought he had it hands down over Johnny Carson as he loved to make people laugh and had a quick wit. Imagine "The Jimmy McDougall Show".
In 2011, Jimmy became a Papa, a role he was born for but as a consummate bachelor, never expected. As a real life Peter Pan, he never wanted to grow up - he had no trouble relating to his adored grandchildren Mette and Myer and was working on them to be his fishing partners..
Jimmy will be greatly missed by Jane; her children Marina Lange (Mike, Mette, Myer) and Curtis Greig (Leanne). Sister Bonnie Bateson (Colin, Margaret, Keith) and the many, many friends he made so easily on his journeys.
Predeceased by his mother, Margaret and his brother Donny. Jimmy and Donny are no doubt together with Guiness in hand, raising their glasses with a “slainte,” as only true Irishmen can do.
There will be a private celebration of life for Jimmy at a future date.
