Ellen Frood

Ellen Frood passed away on October 14, 2025 in Victoria, BC. Born in Ottawa, Ontario, Ellen lived a vibrant, purpose-filled life defined by love, courage, and community. She championed belonging and empowerment of those most marginalized.

She is deeply missed by her husband, Jimmy Kohut, her cherished children Chris and Tara Bergin, and her siblings Peter Frood (Francoise Bouchard) and Janet Frood (Peter Hawke). She is predeceased by her parents, Norah Cassidy Frood and Oren Frood, and lovingly remembered by Jimmy’s family, cousins, her nieces and nephews, and countless friends and colleagues across Canada.

Ellen’s adventurous spirit led her to live in Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, and Nova Scotia before she found her heart’s home in Port Alberni, BC, a community she loved deeply. Recently retired as Executive Director of Sage Haven Society, Ellen’s proudest achievement was leading the creation of a second stage housing initiative for women, gender-diverse people, and children rebuilding after violence.

Her career reflected her lifelong dedication to social justice, equity, and community building. A gifted relationship-builder and tireless advocate, Ellen inspired others with her determination, warmth, and belief in the power of hope.

Ellen found joy in gardening, the coastal fog, her beloved pets, and the simple pleasure of treasure-hunting with Jimmy. Her laughter, creativity, and positivity will be remembered always.

A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, October 22, 2025, from 1–3 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home, 4470 Gertrude Street, Port Alberni, BC. Remarks will begin at 2 p.m.
