It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Paul after a short battle with mesothelioma. He passed peacefully at home with his wife Gail and his daughters Michele and Shelley at his side.
Paul was born in Edmonton, Alberta and grew up in Vancouver, BC. He moved to Port Alberni in 1964 and worked for MacMillan Bloedel for many years at the paper mill, retiring in 2002. He was lucky enough to find love again after his retirement and spent the remainder of his years in a loving relationship with his wife Gail.
Paul joined the Canadian Power and Sail Squadron in 1977 and had been involved in teaching and administration until recently. He was an avid curler but his true passion was the ocean. He started sailing in 1980 and had sailed to Hawaii, the Caribbean and had traversed the Panama Canal twice. He joined the Port Alberni Maritime Heritage Society in 2009 and was an active member up until his illness.
Paul is predeceased by his first wife, Marcella, his eldest daughter Trish Van Ek, his sister Georgina and his brother Bill. He is survived by his loving wife Gail, his daughters Michele Power (Allan) and Shelley Hutchins (Merritt); eleven grandchildren and many honorary grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Jim, and his sisters Donna and Margaret.
There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date.
