We are saddened to announce the passing of our mother Olga Wetick, who passed away peacefully at Westhaven Multi-Care facility in Port Alberni on September 12, 2023. Olga was born in Fernie, BC to Paul and Mary Lytwyn, of Ukrainian Heritage on August 20, 1927. Very soon after she was born, her parents decided to move to a farm in Vilna, Alberta. Mom spent most of her childhood on the farm with her sister Anne and parents. When she was a teen her parents decided to move to Vernon. There in Vernon she met our dad, Steve, he was servicing in the Canadian army. It did not take long when they decided to get married. Dad was released from the army and with a new wife they both set off to Port Alberni because there were a lot of jobs there. Dad got a job and they settled there and had a family.
Olga was predeceased by her husband, Steve in 1991, her sister Anne in 1972, her 9 month old brother, Peter in 1919, her infant grandson, Brent in 1987 and many sister and brother-in-laws, since our dad had 9 other siblings, also a special cousin, Herma in 2019. She is survived by her 2 daughters Evelyn (Keith) Rumney, Charlene (Barry) Yeo and her granddaughters; Jennifer (Travis) Gillian (Clint) and Jacqueline as well as her special great grandsons, Dylan and Jace. She is also survived by many nephews and nieces (to many to name) but she loved them all.
When our dad died, mom got her driver’s license when she was 65. She loved belonging to the Sunshine Club – Cards and travelling were #1 on her list of things to do. She traveled to Spain, Morocco, Portugal, Australia, Reno and BC Casinos. She was a member of the Canadian Legion.
We want to especially thank Mom’s neighbors for always being there for her Jessie, Simar, Karen, Art, Brian, Jayda. Also we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the staff at Westhaven for their excellent and compassionate care they provided our mother. Also thank you to Kelly Weber, mom’s case worker, to Dr. Freddie Meyer for all the years he looked after her and to Dr. Walker the emergency doctor.
Mom had a poem on her wall which said –
Time is …..
Too slow for those who wait,
Too swift for those who fear,
Too long for those who grieve,
Too short for those who rejoice,
But for those who love…..
Time is Eternity
