Ruth (Oma to most), grew up in E. Germany. Raised by her Mother, she was the youngest of 4, then she ventured out alone, across the ocean to Canada. Ruth met the love of her life, Harry, in Regina and soon after they settled in Port Alberni. Friends will remember how much joy Harry and Ruth found in dancing as they ripped up the floor many a nights. They built an amazing life together on their chicken farm. They had cows, pigs, geese and never without a cat or dog. Oma had a special place in her heart for animals. She had special treats for dogs and pats of butter for the cats. There were hundreds of hummingbirds that swarmed her feeders each year. Oma worked hard on the farm and in their gardens which kept her busy canning, juicing and freezing. With 60,000 chickens every 10 weeks they always needed crews to help "pick" chickens or throw hay bales. The crews never left until their bellies were full of Oma's fried chicken, egg salad sandwiches, chili or orange squares.
Ruth was a beautiful, family loving, kind, hardworking soul. She will be remembered for so many wonderful things, and will forever live in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Oma is survived by her daughter Lisa, Grandsons Richard (Hollie), Russell (Rachel), Great grandchildren, Sawyer, Walker and Rowan and her longtime friend Waldi.
We would like to thank the amazing staff at Westhaven for all they did to help Mom/Oma in her final years. A special thank you to Westhaven resident, Pat Lesieur for helping Ruth adjust to her new surroundings when she arrived.
Ruth is predeceased by her husband Harry (2011) and son Norbert (2011).
