Mrs. Theodora Koszegi, the fierce and tenacious matriarch of her family, passed away peacefully on October 29th 2025 at the age of 88. She leaves behind a legacy defined by remarkable strength, unwavering devotion, and the utmost tenacity.
Born in Hungary, Theodora began her Canadian story in 1957, when she bravely immigrated to Canada with her husband Dr. Bela Koszegi (predeceased-2007), her sister Eva Kovacs and her husband Kal Kovacs (predeceased). The trip west from Hungary was tumultuous at best, dodging minefields and armed soldiers, relying on the generosity of strangers while traveling with immense fear and excitement with the thought of living in a free world (Canada), made them push through their perilous journey. With many opportunities and options, they chose to settle in the Port Alberni Valley in 1961. Here they set roots where she spent the majority of her life building a principled and purposeful home with 5 children and later welcoming 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Theodora was the anchor of her family, maintaining a strict and highly disciplined household. Her dedication was most visible in her tireless commitment to her children’s passions. As the organizer, chauffeur, and unwavering supporter of the local swim club, she ensured every practice and distant swim meet was attended, instilling a profound sense of discipline and hard work in her family.
Her long life was a testament to her sheer willpower. She faced many serious health challenges along the way, but she fought each one with the formidable courage and endurance that defined her character. Theodora taught her family that true strength lies in perseverance.
She will be deeply missed by her children (oldest to youngest); Gabriella, George (Tana), Robert (Sheril), Thomas (Line) and David (Erin) grandchildren; Brayden, Katie, Alexandra, Steven, Josslynn, Teagan, Kirstin, Crystal, Robby, Julia, Francesca, Matteo and great-grandchildren Koda and Thoren. Her spirit, rooted in Hungary and flourishing in Port Alberni, will continue to inspire all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation to the West Coast General Hospital in Port Alberni. Without their hard work and professionalism, Theodora would not have enjoyed such a long fruitful life and such a dignified end of life experience.
