

Born May 3, 1929 in Warsaw, Poland, the eldest son of General Izydor R. Modelski, PhD, Under-Secretary of State for War in Poland's WWII Allied Government in Great Britain, and Stanislawa Rago Modelska, both now deceased. He was a descendent of his 17th Century namesake, "Andreas DeGlogowa Wola" an ancestor of his Polish noble family of Zwierzyniec, Krakow, and Lwow.
He is survived by his daughter Diana Modelski-Macaluso of North Port, FL, her husband William Macaluso, his son Marcus Modelski of Olney, MD, granddaughter Jessica Oweis, her husband Rajeh Oweis and grandson Rayan Oweis, along with his brother Tommy of North Port, FL.
Andy attended primary school in Warsaw Poland, high schools in Wales, Oxford and London, and graduated high school in Buffalo, NY. He received an Electrical Engineering Degree from Columbia Technical Institute in DC. He also earned his BA and MA degrees in Geography from the University of Maryland.
He served in the U.S. Army Intelligence Service on active duty and in the active Reserves during the Korean War, the Berlin and Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War.
He worked for Sears and then started his career at the Geography and Map Division of the Library of Congress. He met and married Margaret Mary Kilbridge and they had a daughter, Diana and son, Marcus. They divorced in 1979.
His last position at the Library of Congress was that of Head of Acquisitions and Principal Recommending Officer, acquiring an impressive collection for the LOC of rare atlases, maps and globes.
Andy authored "Railroad Maps of North America: The First Hundred Years" a popular work published by the Library of Congress in 1984. He was also an associate editor for the Handbook of Latin American Studies. He was in the process of finalizing a book about his father -"Son of a Warrior." It depicts his father's military career and escapades, along with many of his own endeavors. Diana will complete this work.
He married Minnie Anne Carnes in 1979. They retired in 1989 and moved from Chevy Chase, MD to Louisa, VA. Almost 20 years later, in 2018 Minnie passed and he moved in with Diana and her partner Will in Frederick, MD and ultimately to North Port, FL where he converted from Catholicism and became a Nichiren Shoshu Buddhist in June of 2022. His final home was with the wonderful staff of Douglas T. Jacobson State Veterans Home in Port Charlotte, FL, and they all took exceptional care of him until his passing.
