He was born in Greenport, New York, March 5, 1927. He was one of eight
children. Before moving to Charlotte County in 1986, he worked on the Sea
Scallop Boats out of Greenport, New York. He spent 18 years working for
the Department of Agriculture on Plum Island, as a steam fitter, he also worked
for Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island for 20 years as a steam
fitter. Mel was a volunteer fireman at the Mattituck Fire Department, he ran
the pump truck, before moving to Charlotte County, Florida
Mel was an active member of the Punta Gorda, Elks #2606 for many years and
later the Port Charlotte Elks, and finally the Deep Creek Elks. He was a member
of the Sons of American Legion#2010 and the VFW #5690
He is survived by his beloved wife, Louise Hansen of Port Charlotte, Six Children,
Melvin Hansen of Southold, New York, Maureen Krupski of Laurel, New York,
David Hansen of Port Charlotte, Florida, Carl Hansen of Laurel, New York,
Jack Hansen of Aquabogue, New York and Marion Hansen of Port Charlotte,
Florida; Thirteen grandchildren and one great grandson. He also leaves two
Sisters, Virginia Dickerson of Mattituck, New York and Maran Erickson of
Greenport, New York and a brother, Danny Hansen of Greenport, New York.
Visitation Thursday, February 18, 2010 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a
Service at 7:00 p.m.at Kays-Ponger & Uselton Funeral Home, 2405 Harbor
Blvd. Port Charlotte, Florida. Additional services and Inurnment will be at a
later date in New York.
In Lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Children's
Scholarship Fund of Deep Creek.
