

Gary Scherlin, a man whose adventurous spirit and zest for life touched all who knew him, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2024, in Port Charlotte, Florida. Born on March 16, 1947, in Brattleboro, Vermont, Gary's journey through life was marked by his love for his family, his country, and the great outdoors.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents Walfred and Bertha Scherlin, and his uncle, Dan McGaffigan. His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his loving wife, Christine Scace, his daughter, Andrea (Matt) Kosma, his son, Jason (Gladys) Sherlin, his stepson, Justin (Elizabeth) Scace, his stepdaughter, Nicole (Tyler) Scace, his grandsons, Michael Scherlin and Jonah Gardner, his granddaughters, Alyssa Scherlin, Novah Gardner, Eloise Scace, and Tessa Scace, and his great-grandson, Xander Sherlin. Gary is also survived by his brothers, Douglas, William, and Mitchell, as well as his sister, Brenda, all of whom will miss him dearly.
Gary proudly served his country as an Army veteran, stationed in Korea during the Vietnam War. Upon returning home, Gary worked in construction for Vermont Yankee, Gays Fuel and Lane Construction in Vermont, where he was known for his strong work ethic and his ability to build anything he set his mind to.
A captain in the Vernon Volunteer Fire Department in Vermont, Gary exemplified the values of service and community. He was also an enthusiastic coach of baseball, imparting not only skills but also the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship to his players.
Gary's interests were as varied as they were numerous. He was an avid square dancer and could often be found leading the do-si-do with a beaming smile. His love for movement extended to bike rides, boating, motorcycles, roller skating, and ice skating. Gary was a man who embraced the changing seasons of New England with skiing with the ski patrol and snowmobiling in the winter, and spending his summers in Winchester, New Hampshire.
An outdoorsman at heart, Gary enjoyed camping and traveling, always seeking new adventures and experiences. His passion for life was evident in his hobbies, which included raising goats, chickens, and geese. Gary's athletic spirit shone through in his love for playing baseball, and he was a man who could truly claim to have built anything—from structures to memories.
Gary's legacy is one of adventure and joy, of a life fully lived and generously shared. His family and friends will remember him for his boundless energy, his willingness to lend a hand, and his ability to make the most of every moment. Gary Scherlin's story is one that will be told with smiles and laughter, with gratitude for the time spent with a man who truly embodied the spirit of adventure. He will be deeply missed, but his adventurous spirit will continue to inspire all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
