John Wesley Meadows passed away on February 16, 2012, at his home in Rotonda West, Florida. He was 93. He was born on April 18, 1918, in Greenup, Kentucky, the only child of John William Meadows and Pearl Osborn Meadows. He grew up in Portsmouth, Ohio, where he graduated from Portsmouth High School. He took college classes at the Ohio University extension in Portsmouth, and later at the University of Dayton. In 1938, he married Viola Pearl Wallace, and they were married for 62 years before she passed away in 2000. They also lived in Dayton, Ohio, and in Indianapolis, Indiana.
John served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was the honor man of his boot company, so was given a choice of Naval schools. He chose Quartermaster School and graduated from that school again as honor man, so was retained there as an instructor.
John was an underwriting manager for American States Insurance Company in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he earned the distinction of CPCU. After retiring from American States, John and Vi moved to Rotonda where they became avid golfers. John was a member of the Elks Club, the American Legion, the Masonic Lodge, and the Rotonda West Community Church. He is a past president of the Rotonda West Property Owners Association; past president of the Fiesta Association; and past president of the Men's Golf Association.
John is survived by his daughter Sandy Chaney (Dennis) of Avon, Indiana, and his son Jack Meadows (Jeannie) of Rockton, Illinois. He has three grandchildren: Beth Groninger-Bright (Bradford) of Plainfield, Indiana; Brian Tatay (Michele) of Indianapolis, Indiana; and Brooke Meadows of Chicago, Illinois. He has two great-grandchildren: Garrett Groninger of Plainfield, Indiana, and Zachary Tatay of Indianapolis, Indiana.
